Easter Myspace Comments

This Easter cartoon by Dave Granlund uses a well-known English proverb. If someone puts all their eggs in one basket, they put all their effort or resources into doing one thing so that, if it fails, they have no alternatives left. This saying is an easy-to-understand metaphor—if you buy some eggs (or collect them from your hens) and put them in one basket, then you drop the basket, your eggs are sure to be broken. Whereas if you use two (or more) baskets, some of the eggs will be unbroken.

EXPLANATION
The cartoon shows an Easter Bunny carrying four baskets filled with Easter eggs. He says, "A lesson from Wall Street ... don't put all your eggs in one basket." Wall Street is the financial district of New York City. The term has become a metonym signifying US financial interests. In a financial context, the saying, "Don't put all your eggs in one basket," means one should diversify to avoid the risk of a big loss. This is exactly what Wall Street failed to do in the lead-up to the global financial crisis, with its massive gamble on subprime mortgages.
