37 creative writing prompts for kids

Writing prompts help students decide on what they would like to write about, perhaps something they never would have thought about. Maybe something like, write a story about a yellow rhinoceros that wanted to join the circus.  The possibilities are endless.

Here are some writing prompts to get you started.

  1. Where is your favorite place to visit and why?
  2. What is the most fun you ever had?
  3. If you could be your favorite cartoon character, who would you be, and why?
  4. If you could have any pet, even an elephant, what would you want, and why?
  5. If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be, and why?
  6. What do you want to be when you grow up?
  7. If you could invent a brand new animal, what would it be? Describe what it would look like, it's personality, where it lives, what it eats, etc.
  8. Who is your best friend, and what do you admire most about him/her.
  9. What is your favorite season, and what do you love most about that time of year?
  10. Look through your photo album and write about one of your favorite memories.
  11. If you could wish for anything, what would you wish for?
  12. If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? What would you use it for?
  13. If you could be famous, what would you want to be famous for? 
  14. Would you rather be able to swim like a fish in the sea or fly like a bird in the sky, and why?
  15. If you could make the world a better place what would be the first thing you would change and why is it important to you?
  16. What qualities do you look for in a best friend?
  17. Write about an important lesson you learned.
  18. If you had the chance to meet with someone from the past who would it be and what questions would you ask them. What would you tell them about what life is like today?
  19. If you grow up to be rich, what do you think you would be like? What would you do with your wealth?
  20. What are some of the things you wish you were able or allowed to do but can't because you are too young?
  21. Which one of your senses do you think you absolutely couldn't live without? What would it be like to have to live without it?
  22. Can you remember a recent dream? Was it a good dream or a bad dream? What was it about? Think of as many details as you can. 
  23. If you could decide where your family took your next vacation where would you go? Do you think everyone in your family would have fun? What would you do while on vacation?
  24. Choose a family member and write about him/her. What do they look like? What type of personality do they have? What do you love most about that person.
  25. If you could be either the most attractive, the smartest, the funniest, the most famous, the richest, or the kindest person in the world, which would you be and why?
  26. If you were an inventor what would you most like to invent and why?
  27. If your best friend lost their memory and couldn't remember you, what would you do and where would you take them to remind them of your friendship and try to help them regain their memory.
  28. If you could be invisible for one day, what would you do?
  29. If you could travel back or forward in time where and during what period of time would you go? 
  30. If you could plan the absolutely best day of your life, what would you do and where would you go?
  31. If you could surprise your family with a special meal that you made all by yourself what would you make? Would you invent your own recipes or find them in a book? Would it be simple or fancy? How would you set and decorate the table and the room?
  32. If you could decorate your bedroom any way you wanted, what would you do? What colors would you use? What would be the theme? What accessories and furniture would you want in your room?
  33. Write a story about a monkey that loves to swing in the trees but went too far and got lost. How does he find his way back home? Talk about the different animals that helped him along the way.
  34. Write a story about polar bear that doesn't like the snow and wanted to leave the arctic. Where did he want to go and what adventures did he have?
  35. Write a story about a boy or girl who finds a buried treasure right in their own backyard. What did they find? Did they keep it a secret? What are they going to do with it?
  36. Write a story about a family of squirrels who lost their home when their tree fell down. Talk about the different homes they tried before they found just the right one.
  37. Write a story about a group of kids who lived all alone on an island. How did they get there? What did they do for food and shelter? Do they get rescued or do they manage to find a way off the island by themselves?
